High School students get real-life lesson in business by starting their own

The pandemic changed every aspect of daily lives. But it also generated a lot of ideas and inventions, including one by a group of high school students in Canton.

“It’s exciting for these guys to get hands-on experience,” said Mike Nieporte, GlenOak High School Teacher.

Students are getting a real-life lesson as part of the High School of Business at GlenOak High School. Every year, seniors run a business through Junior Achievement. It starts with an idea.

“They put together an entire presentation, to outline really what the need for this was. They pitched it. They got investment. From there they have to produce it, market it and they’re actually out there selling it right now,” said Nieporte.

The students formed a company called Disease Defense and created a product called the Shopping Shield.

“It’s a washable fabric cover designed to protect you from germs found on the handle of shopping carts,” said student Aeden Begue.

Begue said students wanted to create something useful and eliminate waste created by single-use disinfectant wipe.

“We’re doing something positive for them and for the planet,” he said.

The students plan to donate 10% of the money raised to the group Partners In Health, the group donates to front line COVID-19 workers.

The cost is $10 for one Shopping Shield, $25 for three. You can purchase one by reaching the students on Facebook and Instagram at @diseasedefense or by email, Diseasedefense@gmail.com
